Preventing health conditions and their complications is an important part of taking care of your health. Various health conditions pose different risks, and a good understanding of your risk is crucial.

Fortunately, many health conditions do not cause problems right away, and so when found early and appropriately managed, your risks can be decreased significantly.

What health conditions commonly cause serious problems?

Cardiovascular disease (heart disease, strokes, vessel disease) and Cancer are the leading causes of sickness and death worldwide. Lung diseases, dementia, and diabetes are also common causes. In addition, there are preventable health conditions that may not cause death but cause a lot of suffering.

How are these conditions prevented?

Since many health conditions do not immediately cause symptoms, your doctor needs to check for them by doing a physical exam, lab tests, and imaging. What tests and when they are done is dependent on your risks. Generally speaking, your doctor would:

  • Assess your risks – based on your history, family history, and physical exam.
  • Check your blood pressure, weight, height, and heart rate.
  • Screen for Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Liver or Kidney diseases, and may do other heart tests (ex: EKG) depending on your risks.
  • Check for Cancer (Breast, Colon, Cervical, Prostate) and depending on your risks (Ovarian, Lung).
  • Check for Infections, HIV, Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Infections.
  • Check for osteoporosis (fragile bones).
  • Check for Iron deficiency, Vitamin deficiencies, Thyroid diseases, Anxiety, Depression, Alcohol/Drug conditions.
  • Recommend vaccines to prevent health conditions

How do I find out and lower my risk?

The first step is establishing consistent care with a primary care doctor. This is important because there are so many factors that can affect your risks. Also, many conditions do not immediately cause symptoms.
